It is important to note that coaches are not qualified to give nutritional advice to athletes, and an accredited sports dietician should be consulted for any individual requirements. Individual requirements will be determined by training load, specific training and body composition goals, nutritional deficiencies, availability and preference (1). As a general guide, a nutrient rich diet will help optimise performance and promote recovery (1) Athletes should ensure they are reaching their carbohydrate and protein requirements in particular to ensure they have optimal energy for training, competitions and recovery.
