Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy involves using water as an aid to help an athlete recover, it is a low impact method that puts limited strain on the athletes muscles and joints. There are two types of hydrotherapy that athletes use:(7,10,11,12)
Cold Water Immersion (CWI)
- Reduces tightness
- Reduces swelling and inflammation
- Best used within 24 hours after exercise
- Reducing the perceptions of fatigue as well as in enhancing physical performance
Cold Water Therapy (CWT)
- Reduces stiffness
- Reduces swelling and inflammation
- Best used within 24 hours after exercise
- Reducing the perceptions of fatigue as well as in enhancing physical performance
CWI seems to be more effective than CWT, due to the heat being applied in CWT possibly increasing swelling and inflammation.
